This historic building in the heart of South Haven’s downtown was built in the late 1800’s. It has been home to the Macdonald Drug Store since 1885 when it was known as Abell’s Friendly Pharmacy. In the early 1960’s the building was covered with a modern expanded metal façade. The beauty of the original building has not graced the city street scape for 45 years. Her unveiling is now under way.

The initial phase of the project was to remove paint from the brick and clean the building. Next, deteriorated limestone window sills and damaged face bricks were replaced. Tuck pointing of the entire façade has been completed.

The original zinc frieze panel at the top of the building is in very good condition despite a deteriorating parapet wall. Repairs will be made followed by a new three color paint application.

In 1945, a fire destroyed the interior of the building. Nothing remains of the original storefront, or any storefronts pre-dating 1962. The building’s owner asked Century Restoration to design a new storefront which would be reminiscent of the original iron storefront construction. Wood column detailing will be used to suggest the iron columns which once supported the façade. A wood paneled lower bulkhead wall will be added and new glazing installed. A storefront cornice detail will cap the new awning. Patterned hexagonal ceramic tile will be installed in the entry. Custom made oak entry doors will finish the new storefront.

The project will be complete by early May of 2008.
